Munich: City creates 600 parking spaces for car sharing – Munich

Sharing instead of owning: In order to reduce the number of private cars in the city, the city wants to increasingly promote the sharing of vehicles. “Shared Mobility” is what traffic planners call it. For this purpose, parking spaces specially reserved for carsharing cars are to be gradually created. The city wants to set up some of them at various so-called mobility points. In the future, Munich residents will be able to choose whether they want to rent a car, a bicycle or an e-scooter. The establishment of 64 mobility points is planned for 2023. According to the mobility department, these should bundle the alternatives to motorized private transport. A prerequisite for this is the connection to local public transport.

In order to encourage people to do without their own car, the city set up car-sharing parking spaces in Giesing and Neuhausen back in 2022. This year, parking spaces will be set up in the inner city area (old town, west end) and in other districts such as Trudering-Riem. The offer should not be limited to the city area: As part of the “MoveRegioM” funding project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, an exemplary mobility point is to be set up in the district of Munich. The aim is to make shared mobility offers more available in the region, says the mobility department.

A total of 600 car-sharing parking spaces are planned throughout the city by 2026. These are now to be advertised publicly, which is a novelty to this extent in Germany, according to the mobility department. To ensure that the award procedure has a legally stable basis, the Mobility Committee first decided on Wednesday to call for tenders for legal advice. When the parking spaces are taken at some point, only the companies that have received the corresponding surcharges are allowed to stand there. This means that each provider gets their own parking space.

The city sees car sharing as an important component of the traffic turnaround. Anyone who only needs a car from time to time should be able to rent one at any time. Two models have prevailed in Munich: the so-called free-floating model and station-based car sharing. Free-floating cars can be parked in any legal parking space in the defined business area. The stationary ones, as the name suggests, have fixed parking spaces to which the cars must be returned.

The 600 newly planned parking spaces will be reserved for stationary car sharing. Because this is particularly relevant for climate protection, because its users are more likely to get rid of their own cars and use public transport and bicycles more often. According to the mobility department, a stationary sharing car should replace twelve to 16 private cars, a freely available only about three to five.
