Munich Band of the Week: Dilruba – Munich

After eight months in her first full-time job, Dilruba Eler, 24, knew she had to change something. Actually, there was this dream. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve been singing with my mother all the time. I wrote my first songs when I was twelve.” A year ago, she decided to give it a try. As a musician.

“My mother’s dream of a music career faded over time,” says Dilruba. “I grew up with the dream, but never really took it seriously.” So she studied education and concentrated on another career. Time flew by. “I thought about music all the time, but I didn’t do it anymore.” Then she changed jobs and put more time into music.

She describes her genre as New Soul or Alternative R’n’B. A style that is currently gaining a foothold in the German-speaking mainstream with artists like Ayliva, but was barely noticeable for a long time. Dilruba also only wrote in English until a few years ago. “Writing lyrics in German is much more intimate. It was a big challenge at first, but since then I’ve felt my music much more.”

Her music is characterized by lush harmonies and a detailed production. Stylistic devices such as riffs, vibrato and vocal breaks make her voice sound devoted and emotional. In the lyrics, however, she also shows a cooler side that sets clear boundaries: Do you want a night with me alone/Your sorrow, you and me and wine/But you take this body for granted/But it is mine.

Dilruba loves to read. She has therefore published her three songs so far as chapters 1-3. In each ballad she wants to tell little stories that together form a story arc. In this case, that is a male protagonist who is involved in unhealthy relationships. In her next songs she also wants to celebrate the beautiful stories, the lighter sides of life.

When she plays concerts, she likes to take unreleased songs with her to try out. But she still wants to stay true to her sound. “You are very easily influenced, especially at the beginning.” Dilruba oscillates from powerful and bluesy to breathy and soft, but above all remains one thing: personal. The fact that approachability is important to her is also evident in the choice of her own name as her stage name: “I want to stand behind my music with my name.”
