Alcohol is allowed again, but glass is banned: The city of Munich is standardizing the rules for so-called hotspots. The nocturnal alcohol ban, which previously applied from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., will be lifted with immediate effect for Gärtnerplatz and Wedekindplatz in Schwabing, as the city announced on Friday. Instead, a ban on glass containers, i.e. bottles, jugs or glasses, will come into force – also from now on. It applies to the public areas of the two squares, daily from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Loud music, be it from mobile boxes or car speakers, is also forbidden from 10 p.m. onwards, in order not to deprive residents of their night’s sleep.
The same requirements now apply to Gärtnerplatz and Wedekindplatz as to Türkenstraße. In all three places it has been loud and sometimes a bit wild at night in the past few weeks: In the Maxvorstadt last weekend up to 1000 people gathered every evening, although they were in small groups, but all in all too close to one another stood and celebrated loudly with alcohol and music. The police cleared Türkenstrasse on both evenings.
To relieve these celebration areas, the city decided this week to close Ludwigstrasse to cars from Friday evening to Sunday at 2 a.m. The aim is to create space for young people between Odeonsplatz and Siegestor. When this concept will be implemented is still unclear, at least not this weekend or next. The proven locations will have to last that long. It pays to adhere to the rules: Violations can be punished with a fine of up to 1000 euros.
