Munich: accommodation tax is postponed – Munich

The plans for a new tourist tax have burst for the time being. After angry reactions from the industry and clear criticism from the opposition, the Greens are now also in favor of postponing the tax. The aim of the parliamentary group is “a good and trusting cooperation” with hoteliers, landlords and restaurateurs, said parliamentary group leader Sebastian Weisenburger. This includes “not simply confronting the hosts with a fait accompli when it comes to such questions, but rather giving them the opportunity to bring criticism and suggestions for change into the consultation process”. This was “regrettably” omitted.

So the SPD is alone with its initiative at the moment. A postponement of the decision in the coming week in the finance committee seems certain. However, the Greens are not fundamentally opposed to a tax on overnight stays in hotels, guesthouses or campsites, but reprimand their coalition partner for his “communication deficit”, in particular Treasurer Christoph Frey (SPD). With the adjournment, the intention was to give his company the opportunity to “make up for the omission” and to invite the industry to talks, said Weisenburger.

One likes to discuss with those involved about when and how the new tax, reacted SPD parliamentary group leader Anne Hübner. The whether is a political decision “that we make in the town hall”. The overnight tax is necessary to “make the city’s budget sustainable”. However, part of the income could also flow into tourism promotion.
