Mother and baby stabbed, suspect arrested

The two-month-old child was the victim of a “disembowelment”. A man suspected of having stabbed a 27-year-old woman and her child this Saturday was arrested in the Jura, announced the Lons-le-Saunier prosecution. The suspect was placed in psychiatric care, the tragedy having potentially occurred against a backdrop of “withdrawal” from narcotics, the Lons-le-Saunier prosecution announced on Sunday.

The infant, whose vital prognosis is engaged, and his mother, who “presented several wounds without obvious vital risk”, were discovered in the morning by the emergency services, “called to intervene at the home of a couple in Les Rousses”, a French Jura ski resort on the border with Switzerland, public prosecutor Lionel Pascal said in a statement.

The child in serious condition

They were airlifted to a hospital in Geneva, he said. “Swiss doctors are struggling to (…) save” the baby whose injury, a “disembowelment”, “is particularly serious”, underlined Lionel Pascal, indicating that the child was “currently undergoing medical treatment”. and that his vital prognosis was still engaged.

“The first elements collected by the investigators” directed “the suspicions towards a relative of the family whom the latter had been hosting for several weeks” and who was no longer there when the help arrived. The father, “left for work in the morning”, is not suspected, said the prosecutor.

“No hearing” of the possible suspect

Initially, the state of health of the man arrested on Saturday afternoon after intense research had been deemed “compatible with police custody, subject to the opinion of a psychiatrist”, explained Lionel Pascal. But the psychiatrist who then examined him found him on the contrary “incompatible” with police custody and the suspect was “subject to admission to psychiatric care”, added the magistrate.

“No hearing” of this man born in 1996 was possible, said Lionel Pascal. The “duration of hospitalization” in psychiatry is “at the discretion of the medical profession”, he added. According to the first elements of the investigation, this young man “originally from the department of Oise” was hosted in the commune of Les Rousses, a ski resort on the border with Switzerland, by the father and mother of the infant “whose he is a distant relative”.

Attempted aggravated murder

“A blatant investigation of the counts of attempted murder and attempted aggravated murder” was entrusted to the Jura gendarmerie group and the Besançon research section and searches were launched to find this man, continued the magistrate.

Research involving 70 gendarmes, including a helicopter and a canine team, were “immediately launched” and the Sparrowhawk plan triggered, which made it possible to arrest “in the middle of the afternoon” the suspect, unknown to justice , according to Lionel Pascal. He was placed in police custody, added the magistrate, who could not immediately specify what exact link he had with the couple.
