Mosquitoes: Is climate change bringing tropical diseases to Germany?

As a result of climate change, mosquitoes that transmit tropical diseases can become native to Germany. The animals are being researched at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg.

For a long time, a mosquito bite was at best annoying in our latitudes. After the mosquito has been buzzing around our head for what feels like hours, it sits on our arm to drink our blood with its pointed snout and an itchy pustule remains. In the meantime, such a mosquito bite could be deadly – even if only in extremely rare cases in Germany. Climate change is to blame. Due to the rising temperatures, mosquito species that previously only survived in more southern regions can become native to Germany. And mosquitoes were able to spread new, tropical diseases in Europe.
