More than one billion euros for the renovation of several CHU sites

The Pellegrin University Hospital Center (CHU) in Bordeaux – Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

  • “The 14,200 employees have been waiting for a long time for the Bordeaux University Hospital to be renovated, because it really needs it,” said the CHU’s general manager, Yann Bubien, on Tuesday.
  • About ten operations on all CHU sites should make it possible to construct 90,000 m² of buildings, and to renovate as many.
  • The Pellegrin site as well as that of Saint-André, which are aging, will be completely rehabilitated.

The Bordeaux University Hospital is in a “paradoxical” situation, Minister of Health Olivier Véran said on Tuesday. “It is both ranked first for four years in the ranking of hospitals in the Point, it is considered to be one of the jewels of French university hospital centers, but on the other hand it is second to last in terms of dilapidated buildings. In some buildings from the 1970s there is a shower for 25 beds… I shudder at the idea. It was really urgent to transform this CHU. “

The Minister thus announced State aid of 240 million euros, released under the Health Segur, which will support the “New CHU” plan of 800 million euros over the next ten years. In total, it is even 1.2 billion euros that will be committed to renovate or rebuild the entire CHU. “This is a project that has been in the pipeline for years, and which finally comes to fruition thanks to Ségur,” said CHU Director General Yann Bubien. The 14,200 employees have been waiting for a long time for the renovation of the Bordeaux University Hospital, because it is in dire need of it. “

Hospitalization and emergency activities reorganized around Pellegrin and Pessac

The CHU, with a budget of 1.2 billion euros per year, covers Bordeaux, Pessac, Talence, and Lormont. And the renovation project will concern all the sites. About ten operations should make it possible to construct 90,000 m² of buildings, and to renovate as many. Ultimately, hospitalization and emergency activities will be organized around two sites: the Pellegrin hospital group in Bordeaux and the South hospital group in Pessac.

“The choice of the latter site is explained in particular by the strong demographic growth of this sector of the Bordeaux agglomeration, justifying the presence of an emergency service as close as possible to the inhabitants, and outside the city center of Bordeaux. “, Justifies the Bordeaux University Hospital. “The phasing of all the work will be determined before the summer,” announces Yann Bubien. The problem is that we are on an occupied site, and that we receive a million patients per year, plus visitors. We must therefore organize ourselves over the next ten years. “

New maternity

Flagship of the CHU, the Pellegrin site is a tripod dating from 1978. It will be fully rehabilitated. “The CHU’s major project is to build a huge technical platform at the bottom of this tripod with all the operating theaters, medical and surgical resuscitation, Samu / Smur and emergencies,” continues Yann Bubien. We are also going to redo the maternity hospital in Bordeaux, which is the largest maternity hospital in France with 6,000 deliveries per year, but which is dilapidated. It should see the light of day next to the current children’s hospital. “

The Saint-André hospital, in the center of Bordeaux, will also be fully rehabilitated, and the outpatient will be prioritized there. On the other hand, he will lose his emergencies. “We are redoing everything, it is a very modern hospital that will be reborn,” announces Yann Bubien. We will keep the historic square with the cloister, which will be renovated, to turn it into a nursing home which will be open seven days a week for all so-called daily emergency operations. The adolescent hospital will for its part be integrated into the Saint-André hospital and a consultation platform – in dermatology, ophthalmology, etc. – for all Bordeaux residents will be offered. A crèche will be created, as well as a digital space with healthy start-ups that will be installed in the heart of the hospital. Last point it will be a public health hospital, with a prevention center. The rest, the more recent part, “will be ceded.”

The third large site that will be affected by these investments, that of the Haut-Lévêque hospital in Pessac. In addition to new emergencies, new buildings to house cardiac and thoracic surgery activities, a specialty of the establishment, will be constructed.

Transfer of CHU assets

“It is a project that prepares the future of the CHU, we do not patch up right to left, it is a large-scale project”, insists Benoit Elleboode, the director general of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) New Aquitaine. The financing will therefore be done with aid of 240 million euros from the State, as well as self-financing from the CHU, asset disposals which should bring in around 100 million euros, and bank loans.

“The aid of 240 million euros, will not be fully paid for the New Aquitaine region, specifies Olivier Véran, poorer departments in terms of care offers will also have financial support from the State . “
