More than 100 organizations want a stronger ambition for nature

On the occasion of the IUCN congress in Marseille, more than a hundred NGOs, representatives of companies, communities or even religious movements called, on Tuesday, governments to be more ambitious to protect nature during forthcoming international negotiations.

A new global framework for the protection of biodiversity is currently being negotiated, but they are made more difficult with the Covid-19 pandemic. The negotiations must be concluded at the COP15 on biodiversity to be held in April in China, after two postponements.

” Reverse “

“This represents a unique opportunity for the world in a decade to obtain a comprehensive agreement to stop the loss of nature and reverse the trend, but the pace of negotiations is slow and lacks ambition,” according to a joint statement.

The appeal is signed by nature protection NGOs like WWF International or BirdLife International, charitable NGOs like Care International, the world organization of the scout movement, the Parliament of religions, representatives of indigenous peoples, the coalition of Business for Nature companies.

“No social justice without conservation of nature”

They ask in particular that the issue of human rights be taken into account in the objectives of nature protection, that the final agreement properly tackles the causes of biodiversity loss, “including agricultural and food systems, forestry, of non-sustainable fishing, infrastructure and mining ”, that adequate financial resources be ensured as well as an effective implementation mechanism.

“We need to make sure that during this decade we repair our relationship with nature, for the sake of our future and that of the planet,” said Patricia Zurita, CEO of BirdLife International. “There will be no social justice without nature conservation” and vice versa, emphasizes Sofia Sprechmann, General Secretary of Care International. For Eva Zabey, Executive Director of Business for Nature, an ambitious and clear nature conservation framework “will give businesses the political confidence we need to scale and accelerate action.”
