Monica Vitti: The icon of modern Italian cinema

The great Italian film actress Monica Vitti is dead. She died at the age of 90 in her hometown of Rome. Vitti became one of the defining faces of new Italian cinema in the early 1960s through the films of director Michelangelo Antonioni. She went on to work for many other world cinema filmmakers, including Ettore Scola, Luis Buñuel, and Franco Rossi.

Monica Vitti has received countless awards and honors

She has received numerous awards in her career, including the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1984 and the Golden Lion in Venice in 1995 for her life’s work. Vitti had been in a relationship with director and producer Roberto Russo since 1973, and the couple married in 2000 after 27 years. For the last 20 years she has been suffering increasingly from a degenerative disease and has hardly been seen in public. She passed away on February 2, 2022.
