Moncler, known for its high-end down jackets, is giving up fur

Faced with a public increasingly sensitive to animal welfare, the big names in fashion, such as Chanel, Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Gucci, Versace, Prada, Valentino, Armani, Canada Goose, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent and Brioni are increasingly abandoning real fur.

Italian Moncler, known for its high-end parkas, announced on Tuesday that it was also giving up the use of animal fur.

“The company will stop sourcing fur this year and the last collection to feature fur will be Fall/Winter 2023,” a statement said.

An approach “in line with Moncler’s ongoing commitment to responsible business practices” and “which builds on the brand’s commitment with the Italian animal rights organization LAV representing the Fur Free Alliance”, according to the brand.

A “marketing stunt”

The French fur industry on Tuesday denounced a “marketing stunt” by Moncler, which announced in the same press release the cessation of fur and the launch of a new collection based on recycled or organic materials.

The sector also warns of the “pressure from animalist organizations” and their methods of “harassment, blackmail, manipulation, real form of tyranny suffered in the clothing sector”.

“Bravissimo to Moncler for finally adapting to the times”

“Bravissimo to Moncler for finally adapting to the times,” welcomed the PETA association (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in a press release.

“The company’s decision to turn its back on this cruel material follows years of pressure from animal rights activists, including nearly 100,000 emails from supporters of Peta and its global entities.” , continues the association.

And to conclude: “The fashion giants have understood it well, fur only has its place on the animals to which it belongs. Many brands are embracing vegan, sustainable and innovative textiles, having realized that to be truly ethical, you have to ignore any animal-derived products, including down, which, as Peta revealed, is often obtained by plucking the feathers of geese raw and full handful, while these struggle and end up with open and bloody wounds. In this momentum recently, brands such as the Italian Armani, have announced that they have also abandoned angora after abandoning fur.
