Two years ago Monchi weighed 182 kilos – today the singer of the band Feine Sahne Fischfilet suddenly weighs 65 kilos less. A report on why a tough man learned to show weakness and how he managed to save his life.

Football ultra, face of the left-wing scene and frontman of the punk band Feine Sahne Fischfilet: Almost everyone in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Germany knows the singer Monchi. On a bike ride with the star he now talks about the pressure and fears that weighed on him for many years while he was being watched by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and receiving death threats from neo-Nazis. The singer only realized how great these fears were when he took a break two years ago and began an incredible diet. In just one year he lost 65 kilos. A bike ride over the cliffs of Rostock and a story about why you weigh 182 kilos and what that has to do with toxic masculinity.

Monchi from Feine Sahne Fischfilet: A report on the weakness of masculinity

The last time I saw Monchi, the punk from Western Pomerania, was when he fell on me with his 182 kilos. Drenched in sweat and with a torn shirt, the singer of the band Feine Sahne Fischfilet jumped down from the upper tier of the Berlin Columbiahalle into the crowd. Six years and 150 pounds later, he’s standing in front of me. In the shadow of the sky-blue dockyards of the Rostock port, he hugs me with a grin and then gets on his bike.

Just two years ago, every bike collapsed under Monchi’s weight. Today he rushes off, I follow. At the first corner, a book slips out of his pocket and lies on the wet cobblestones. It’s his own, new: “Never full”. In it, the punk rocker tells the story of his incredible diet. But why is a tough guy suddenly writing a book about losing weight? And how did a bon vivant like Monchi manage to lose almost half his body weight in just two years? I pick up the book and pedal: time to travel back.
