More comfort, more service: Together with Deutsche Bahn (DB), the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) presented their modernized couchette cars on Monday. Both rail companies announced that they are to be used in more and more Nightjet trains to and from Hamburg. A total of 22 passenger cars from ÖBB’s existing night train fleet were converted into multifunctional couchette cars. The newly designed 4-seater compartments with fixed beds are intended to increase travel comfort, especially for families. Bicycles can also be taken along and there is free WiFi. “By 2026 we want to have doubled the number of Nightjet travelers to three million a year,” said Sabine Stock, board member of ÖBB-Personenverkehr. It is not only important to include new destinations in the Europe-wide night train network, but also to offer modern and comfortable night trains. In the coming years, Deutsche Bahn, together with other partner railways, wants to connect 13 European metropolises by rail overnight. In addition to the connections to and from Hamburg, the modernized ÖBB couchette cars will also be used on the Zurich-Berlin and Zurich-Hamburg routes and on the Innsbruck-Munich-Cologne-Amsterdam and Vienna-Cologne-Amsterdam routes.
