Marco Rose is the new coach at RB Leipzig and, unlike Domenico Tedesco, wants to play actively.
Marco Rose is back in the Bundesliga – faster than he would have expected after leaving BVB. The 45-year-old became official on Thursday from RB Leipzig as the new head coach presented.
At the press conference, Oliver Mintzlaff explained that Rose had agreed without much hesitation and “after just five seconds to think about it” to take over as coach in his native city. Leipzig’s managing director also revealed that his doubts about Domenico Tedesco didn’t just arise from the recent bankruptcies against Frankfurt and Donetsk.
“Even towards the end of the second half of the season we felt that this wasn’t the kind of football we wanted. It lacked appeal and dynamism,” said Mintzlaff, who stuck with Tedesco despite early doubts in the spring. “The effect we wanted didn’t materialize,” he now had to state.
After Jesse Marsch, Tedesco is the second coach in a year who was unable to raise the Red Bulls to the desired level. But Mintzlaff was confident that things would finally improve with Rose. “You plan things and if they don’t work out then you have to react. With Marco we have a clear conviction in terms of the philosophy of the game. Marco brings all the things that make us stand out in our DNA, he finds a good mix of possession and pressing elements,” explained the 47-year-old (via rblive.de).
He sees it as “a happy coincidence” that Rose was currently available. The ex-Dortmunder was “very congruent with our philosophy,” said Mintzlaff. “We want to get back to continuity and development with Marco. For that you need a coach who develops something. Marco is excellent at that.”
In the coming weeks, Rose will have to work with a squad at RBL that he believes is “not particularly large, but very balanced”. The playing system is focused on the center, but there are no classic wingers – a fact that he had not particularly liked at BVB, as one should perhaps say at this point. Nevertheless, Rose found: “An exciting squad that has a good structure, also a good age structure.”
The new head coach’s first goal is stability, he stressed. “We have to get that through more activity in our game,” said Rose (via picture), who made it clear that he was aiming for a different approach than his predecessor. “We have to take things more into our own hands. Even if that’s not to blame Domenico. But now I’m sitting here and I’m going to change a few things. I won’t make sure that we don’t concede goals, but that we attack early on ourselves.”
