Ministry of Health report: Child vaccinations probably before Christmas

Status: 11/17/2021 7:57 p.m.

From December 20, vaccination of five to eleven year olds could be possible – the Ministry of Health expects. The distribution of the first delivery of the children’s vaccine is now to be discussed.

The Federal Ministry of Health expects that a corona vaccine for children between the ages of five and eleven could be available until shortly before Christmas. A possible approval for this age group for the vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer can still be expected in November, according to a report by the department on the federal-state consultations. “Subject to approval, this children’s vaccine is expected to be available in Germany for the first time on December 20, 2021.”

The ministry intends to discuss the distribution of the first announced delivery of around 2.4 million doses with the federal states, resident doctors and pharmaceutical wholesalers in the coming days.

In Germany, vaccinations for children are only possible from the age of twelve. There are a total of 9.2 million children under the age of twelve in this country for whom there is still no approved vaccine.

Up to 25 million vaccination “boosters” as a target

In addition, the government is aiming for 20 to 25 million booster vaccinations by the end of the year, according to the report. “To do this, an average of three million people across Germany will have to decide to have a booster vaccination in the coming weeks.”

In addition to individual protection, international data, especially from Israel, showed the high benefit of third-party vaccinations to contain the infection rate. Sufficient vaccines are available for boosting vaccinations, explains the ministry. In view of the rapidly increasing demand, in addition to the preparation from BioNTech / Pfizer, more vaccines from Moderna should be used again in the coming weeks.
