Nearly 24 years ago, Mike Tyson bit off a piece of the ear of then heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield in a fight in Las Vegas. Now the former boxing pro has used the legendary scandal as a marketing strategy.

It was one of the biggest scandals in boxing history: On June 29, 1997, Mike Tyson bit off a piece of his opponent’s right ear during a fight against then-heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas. For this, the then 30-year-old was disqualified by the referee and banned for one year. He also had to pay a $3 million fine. Tyson is now selling bitten ears with cannabis extract in the style of the bite attack of yesteryear.

“Holy ears! They’re finally here! Go get your Mike Bites now,” writes the 55-year-old on Twitter. The gummy bears will be sold in pharmacies in California, Massachusetts and Nevada, according to NBC News.

Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield have reconciled

Tyson founded a marijuana farm with three business partners in California in 2018. The “Tyson Ranch” is about a two-hour drive northeast of Los Angeles and measures a good 16 hectares, which corresponds to about 22 football fields. His company, Tyson 2.0, sells pre-rolled joints, edibles, beverages, and marijuana concentrates.

He now seems to have reconciled with his former opponent Holyfield. In 2013 they appeared together in a commercial for the sporting goods chain Footlocker, in which Tyson gave Holyfield the piece of his ear that had been bitten off. Last year, the two actually wanted to get back into the ring together. But Holyfield canceled because there was apparently no financial agreement.

By the way, a bite attack similar to that of Tyson on Holyfield happened last year at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

There the Moroccan heavyweight boxer Youness Baalla tried to bite his opponent in the face when he lost to David Nyika from New Zealand. “I think he was trying to get my cheekbone. Luckily he had his mouthguard in and I was a bit sweaty. He probably just got a mouthful of sweat,” said the New Zealand boxer afterwards.
