“These are alarm signals that cannot be put off for 14 days”: The head of the German Police Union (DPolG), Heiko Teggatz, warns of an escalation of the refugee crisis like in 2015 if action is not taken quickly.
A.In view of the flow of refugees and migrants on the German-Polish border, the Federal Police Union (DPolG) expects the refugee crisis to escalate, as in 2015, if action is not taken quickly.
The situation must be taken seriously in view of the up to 1,000 migrants arriving at the border every day, said DPolG chairman Heiko Teggatz on “Bild live” on Friday. “These are alarm signals that cannot be put off for another 14 days.”
Otherwise you will “experience a collapse like the one we had on the southern border in 2015,” said Teggatz. The union boss also criticized the fact that he had been waiting for a response from Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) to his fire letter for two weeks.
It is “incomprehensible that our federal government has reached a standstill. If a federal government is in office, it should also manage the business and make decisions, ”said Teggatz.
In the previously unanswered letter, the Federal Police Union had requested temporary border controls with Poland, sanctioning of airlines that work with the Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko and better protection of the EU’s external borders with the support of the European border protection agency Frontex.
Since August, thousands of migrants – mostly from the Middle East and Africa – have tried to cross the Polish border from Belarus. Warsaw had already stationed thousands of soldiers on the border with Belarus in the past few weeks, erected a barbed wire fence and declared a state of emergency in the border area.
The EU is assuming that Lukashenko will retaliate against the sanctions decisions taken by Brussels in response to the influx of refugees. It is believed that the Belarusian authorities are targeting the refugees at the EU borders.
