Asylum compromise: advocates and opponents put pressure on

Shortly before a possible agreement of the EU states on a common European asylum policy, supporters and opponents of the reform plans tried to influence the federal government. SOS Humanity activists protested in front of the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin.
The representatives of the organization, which rescues boat migrants in distress in the Mediterranean, handed over more than 62,000 signatures for a petition calling on the federal government to initiate a coordinated European rescue program.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) should oppose “the trend towards the devaluation of European fundamental and human rights and the erosion of rule of law principles” at the meeting in Luxembourg this Thursday and not support the planned reform of the common European asylum system.
German district association approves reform
In contrast, the German district association spoke out in favor of the planned reform. The president of the municipal umbrella organization, Reinhard Sager (CDU), told the newspapers of the Funke media group: “We are backing the Federal Minister of the Interior with the aim of achieving fairer burden-sharing between the member states within the EU and limiting irregular migration. “
For this purpose, asylum procedures should be introduced at the EU’s external borders for people with little prospect of staying. Asylum seekers whose application is rejected must be deported directly from there. Recognized refugees and those whose applications cannot be finally processed there should be distributed among the EU states according to a fair key.
The managing director of the UN children’s charity Unicef in Germany, Christian Schneider, said it was “an important step that the federal government wants to campaign at EU level for all children seeking protection within the meaning of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, whether in families or unaccompanied, to be exempted from the planned border procedures”.
