Many farmers in Mexico are suffering from severe drought. The government now wants to artificially generate rain. However, the method carries risks.
They are used to drought, the farmers in Tamaulipas. Hardly any rain has ever fallen in the Mexican state in the first few months of the year. This year, however, the water shortage is greater than it has been for decades. The dams are empty, the ground is parched. A red dot appears on the country’s drought map, extreme drought. So that the millet and corn don’t wither in the fields, it’s supposed to rain now, but not naturally. The Mexican authorities are taking an unusual measure: they are tapping into the clouds.
