Mexico: Hundreds of migrants found in the trailer of an abandoned truck

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, police officers rescued 343 people from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador from an abandoned truck. Among them 103 unaccompanied minors. Officials found the vehicle stationary and without a driver on a highway, the National Institute for Migration said.

The closed trailer is equipped with fans, ventilation devices and a second floor. So the people were on two levels in the truck.

The children were handed over to the authorities. The residence status of the other migrants is being clarified.

In early December, 54 migrants, mostly from Central America, died when their truck overturned during an accident in southern Mexico. Tens of thousands of migrants, mainly from Central America, try to escape poverty and violence every year and make their way to the USA.
