The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) announced on Nov. 28 that it hadfine Facebook Developer Meta Paid 265 Million Euros for Violating EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Rules especially The Commission said it fined Meta for failing to design Facebook to protect users from data breaches.
The announcement comes after more than a year of investigation. This began in April 2021, with the breach occurring earlier in late 2019.
The data breach was first discovered when a Tech Crunch report revealed that the phone numbers of hundreds of millions of Facebook users live in an online database that anyone can access. which even if the database is later deleted by the web host. But the existence of that database revealed that Facebook’s data had been compromised.
Then, in April 2021, the DPC began investigating the breach. At the time, Meta posted a message about the breach claiming that attackers had used the contact importer tool to spam servers with phone numbers to see which Facebook accounts were linked to them.
In a statement, Meta claims that it fixed the vulnerability when exploits were found and that the tool is now secure.
According to a new DPC statement, this was a “violation of Articles 25(1) and 25(2) GDPR” and “imposed fines totaling 265 million euros.”
