Messe München: First refugees from Ukraine move into tent city – Munich

For the first time, 97 refugees from the Ukraine moved into the tent city erected on the parking lot in Riem on Tuesday. In the emergency accommodation, which has been available since January 6 and has not been needed so far, they should only stay two nights, said a spokesman for the social department. As early as this Thursday, all 97 refugees are to be relocated to quarters in the surrounding districts, because the agreed accommodation quota in the state capital has so far been fulfilled. The social department therefore also considers the current situation to be manageable.

The number of daily arrivals from Ukraine is currently less than 100. The number of refugees who were initially accommodated in private quarters, which they now have to leave again, has remained manageable. The two school gymnasiums on Marsplatz and on Görzer Straße, which served as an emergency reserve for the Christmas holidays when it was not possible to move refugees to quarters outside of Munich, are currently only available in stand-by mode, so they are free.

Nevertheless, there are no signs of relaxation for the employees of the Office for Housing and Migration. “The acquisition of short-, medium- and long-term accommodation options continues unabated,” said the spokesman for the social department. Suitable real estate would have to be found and equipped accordingly, especially since the four temporary buildings currently occupied should also be vacated again because they do not represent a permanent solution.

The city repeatedly has to accept asylum seekers from Afghanistan and Syria

The city currently has around 2,000 beds in hotels and permanent buildings, as well as over 900 beds in lightweight halls. A total of 5625 beds are to be created, of which 4500 are to be suitable for long-term accommodation. The search for locations for containers and permanent structures is in full swing. The tent city at the exhibition center in Riem with 2000 beds is available as emergency accommodation until March 16th.

Since April 2022, more than 24,000 people have fled to Munich from Ukraine. How many actually stayed here cannot be said with certainty. So far, 19,255 registrations have been counted. The district administration department has granted residence to a total of 16,409 refugees.

In addition to the refugees from the Ukraine, the city also has to take in asylum seekers from other countries – especially Afghanistan and Syria – because the government of Upper Bavaria does not have enough communal accommodation. “We still have places to accommodate asylum seekers, but it will be tight if the daily arrival numbers remain,” said the spokesman for the social department.
