When it comes to electric sedans, Mercedes is taking a more cautious approach even with its sports versions. The best examples are the new AMG EQE 53 and its sister model, the EQE 43.

Where should the journey still go in terms of engine performance in the electric age? Tesla, Lucid or Nio – when it comes to kilowatts and horsepower, some now break the 1,000 hp mark without any shame. AMG, otherwise hardly known for its dynamic abstinence, makes it much more reserved, but by no means unsportsmanlike, with the sports version of the still young Mercedes EQE. The optical extras that distinguish the AMG EQE 53 from its tame brother EQE 350 are quite manageable and so the sports badge from Affalterbach is hardly significant, which should particularly please those who prefer the discreet appearance. This puts the AMG EQE 53 in a relaxed position behind its role model, the EQS, whose AMG 53 version also looks hardly more robust than the series EQS. In contrast to the normal EQE, the AMG versions have modified aprons, a suggested slatted front and rear spoiler and sports seats, which can only be covered with leather on request.

Even if AMG has not implanted such wild power reserves in its sports versions as the international competition, none of the customers should complain about a lack of dynamics, because even the smaller Mercedes AMG EQE 43 has an impressive 350 kW / 476 hp and a maximum torque of 860 Nm. With 460 kW / 626 hp and 950 Nm, the 53er puts two more shovels on top and can even offer up to 505 kW / 687 hp / 1,000 Nm with a short-term boost version at the start of the race. In contrast to the weaker off-the-shelf EQE models, where all-wheel drive is only offered as an option, the AMG double pack is obligatorily equipped with this sensible drive variant. Air suspension, various driving programs and all-wheel steering are also standard.

What most customers would hardly like is that the AMG EQE 43, like the weaker variants, is already slowed down at 210 km/h. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which is unimportant in reality, does not appear. The 53er can do this in 3.3 seconds if desired and can only be 240 km/h fast with the AMG Plus package, which is subject to a surcharge. This contrasts with a standard consumption of 19.7 to 23.2 kWh per 100 kilometers for both electric models. This means that the two brothers with their 90.6 kWh battery pack will have to go back to the charging station after 440 to 530 kilometers at best. The DC fast charging system works at a maximum speed of 170 kilowatts. The space inside is generous, even if you sit a little higher than in a vehicle with a combustion engine due to the design, because the battery pack is installed in the floor. The trunk volume of the 4.94 meters long and 2,450 kg heavy Mercedes AMG EQE 53 is 430 liters.
