With a young man becoming a midwife, gender stereotypes can be shattered. To laugh, because it is indeed a comedy. As its title suggests Wise man by Jennifer Devoldere, discovered at the Alpe d’Huez Festival, goes off the beaten track to tell how a young man who failed the medical entrance exam will enter the school of midwives. In the title role, Melvin Boomerdiscovered with the series The world of tomorrowis taught the trade by Karin Viard while trying to hide from those around him that he evolves in this almost exclusively female environment.
“He has to fight against ready-made ideas, his masculine modesty and the mystery that a woman represents for a man, explains Karin Viard to 20 minutes. She embodies an energetic and competent heroine whom she defines as being “a feminist without being a lecturer”. The meeting between this woman of experience and this kid who ends up appreciating a profession he despised is rich in varied emotions.
This subtle comedy reveals an unknown world through the eyes of endearing characters that the director makes evolve in a natural way between professional and personal environment. The dynamism of the actors is not for nothing in the charm that emerges from Wise man. “I loved being a fake midwife, as if I was playing the shopkeeper,” confides Karin Viard. She transmits her enthusiasm to her young pupil as well as to the spectator.
