The number of users is still small, but is growing steadily: More and more viewers are receiving their TV signal directly via the Internet.

More and more households in Germany no longer watch television via cable or satellite, but instead use the Internet.

At the same time, the number of users is still small compared to the classic reception channels. In the meantime, 1.8 million households completely forego reception channels such as cable, satellite, terrestrial or even IPTV and instead connect their televisions exclusively to the Internet. In the case of IPTV, internet access is also required, but an additional device is also required for the offer and it is focused on the television. When using TV via the World Wide Web, the offer is practically accessible to everyone and can be used on various devices such as laptops, tablets or mobile phones.

These results emerge from the digitalization report Video 2021 of the state media authorities as media regulators. The report was presented on Monday at the Medientage Munich industry meeting.

This means that the number has increased by a good 700,000 households compared to the previous year. The number is still small. The report said: “However, your growth is impressive. Since the beginning of their survey in the digitization report 4 years ago, their number has increased almost tenfold, from 0.5 percent in 2018 to 4.7 percent of all TV households in Germany. “

More than 95 percent of households in Germany have at least one television set, that is almost 39 million households. According to the digitization report, the number remains at a stable high level. “The number of households without a TV set has declined slightly compared to the previous year and has leveled off at 2 million after a rise of several years.”
