Meat substitute: It’s about the tofu sausage economy

Meat substitutes are trendy. The market is growing by 6.5 percent compared to the previous year, but Germans are eating less and less meat. The industry is facing a fundamental change.

Veggie burgers, tofu sausage and pea schnitzel are the big hits in the supermarket. The space they occupy on the shelves is increasing every year. Even sharply rising food prices can apparently do little to harm demand. But where there are climbers, there are also losers: in this case beef, pork and poultry meat. A trend that is confirmed by data that the Federal Statistical Office last published. Accordingly, the market for vegan or vegetarian meat alternatives has grown significantly again in 2022. Production increased by 6.5 percent compared to the previous year. A sign that Germans are increasingly losing their fear of plant-based alternatives. Although many consumers are not willing to give up meat entirely, they are increasingly turning to vegan or vegetarian alternatives.
