The former minister, who created and directed the ARS of Mayotte, denounces the operation of destruction of slums and massive expulsion of foreigners which was to begin this Tuesday April 25 on the archipelago before obtaining a reprieve.

In Mayotte, the Wuambushu operation divides. There are those – mostly Mahorais and elected officials – who are in favor of it, seeing in Comorian immigration the cause of all their ills. And the others, associations for the defense of the rights of foreigners, health personnel of the archipelago, magistrates, who think that this will not solve anything. For former minister Dominique Voynet, who piloted missions on the spot and created the ARS of Mayotte, of which she took the helm from September 2019 to February 2021, Wuambushu is only a state communication operation which “will create all-out damage”.

What do you think of Operation Wuambushu?

It is political gesticulation, intended to calm the annoyance of Mahoran elected officials and to strike the collective imagination, to mask the impotence of the State. The current situation is not only the fault of the State, which replaces local authorities which do not give themselves the means to assume their competences. But this is once again the use of many means for something that will only have negative consequences. When we went to Mayotte, we understood that this operation, even if it was ethically acceptable, but I am convinced that it was not, cannot work.

For what ?
