Mayor of Seeg remains in custody on suspicion of fraud – Bavaria

Because of the suspicion of care fraud in the millions, the mayor of the municipality of Seeg (Ostallgäu district) remains in custody. The district court of Nuremberg-Fürth dismissed a complaint by the defense for the mayor as unfounded, said the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Fraud and Corruption in the Healthcare System (ZKG) on Tuesday. You continue to see the conditions for an arrest warrant met, including in particular the risk of flight. The manager of the nursing home is also in custody.

According to the information, investigators searched several objects in the region again, including the town hall. The aim of the new campaign was to determine the background to various cash flows.

About three weeks ago, around 50 investigators searched several buildings, including the town hall and the affected nursing home. Several media reported about it. At that time, numerous – including digital – documents had been secured. In addition, accounts were seized. The first evaluation of documents had now made the new search necessary, said the central office located at the public prosecutor’s office in Nuremberg.

Between May 2020 and June 2022, Mayor Markus Berktold (CSU) and the nursing home manager are said to have repeatedly created sham invoices for the nursing home and a nursing service and thus wrongly charged the nursing care fund for reimbursement of additional corona-related expenses.

They are said to have acted commercially and thus received more than 1.1 million euros from the “care rescue package” created because of the corona pandemic. The head of the nursing home is said to have embezzled more than 110,000 euros in company funds by the end of 2021 through bogus invoices. A third suspect is said to have assisted in this. She wasn’t arrested. A report by a company employee had therefore started the investigation.
