Just a few days ago, Matija Sarkic was playing for the Montenegro national team. Now his club has announced the player’s death.
Montenegro’s national football goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26. His English club FC Millwall announced this on Saturday. The second division club did not initially provide any information on the cause of death. Only ten days ago, Sarkic was in goal for Montenegro in the friendly against Belgium.
“Millwall Football Club is deeply shocked to hear “We are very sorry to announce the death of Matija Sarkic at the age of 26,” the statement said. Sarkic, who was born in Grimsby, East England, moved from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers to the London club in 2023 and was the Lions’ regular goalkeeper last season.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time,” Millwall’s statement continued. “The club will have no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected.”
The British newspapers “Daily Mirror” and “The Sun” reported, without citing sources, that Sarkic had died after a short, serious illness.
