Thomas Müller is back in the starting XI – and Bayern celebrate the highest victory under coach Tuchel on the way to the title. Serge Gnabry shines as a double packer. One thing is clear for the President.

Thomas Müller, as captain and frontman, led the lively Bayern stars in front of the celebrating fans after their six-goal gala in a close fight for the title. After the biggest victory under coach Thomas Tuchel, Munich are well on the way to expanding their impressive series of championships.

“But there’s no reason to get completely euphoric now. It was a good performance, a deserved win and the next step in the right direction,” summarized Tuchel, who made it 6-0 (2: 0) against FC Schalke 04 quickly and visibly relaxed into the catacombs.

Shortly before the start of Borussia Dortmund’s later home game with a turbo start against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Tuchel was satisfied in the Allianz Arena that the lack of self-image was back. Take “this atmosphere, this basic energy” with you in the next few weeks, said the Bayern coach before the decisive tasks against RB Leipzig and on the last day of the game in Cologne. Bayern have the eleventh championship title in a row in their own hands.

Müller plays and scores

With his first goal since the 4-2 in Munich’s premiere game by Tuchel six weeks ago against pursuers Borussia Dortmund, Müller initiated the easy victory (21st minute). “I’m happy to have scored the can opener. It was a great feeling,” said Müller. Joshua Kimmich with his first penalty and the 25th goal in total in the Bundesliga (29th) and Gnabry with a brace (50th/65th) used the weaknesses of the Schalke defense for more goals. Substitute Mathys Tel (80′) and Noussair Mazraoui in added time then struck with his Bayern debut goal.

75,000 spectators witnessed Bayern Munich attacking an overwhelmed opponent with more speed and better structure. And FC Schalke, who suffered another setback in a season full of setbacks. “We kept getting up,” said sporting director Peter Knäbel. “I think this season it applies to everyone down there: get up one more time than fall. And then they stay in the league.”

FC Bayern also suffered an unusual number of setbacks this season, such as the premature exit from the DFB Cup and the quarter-final knockout in the Champions League. The 33rd championship would be all the more important. The bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic happily high-fived each other several times in the VIP box, not only when Müller shone as a goalscorer after his most recent reserve role. “You can see that Thomas is indispensable,” commented President Herbert Hainer on Ur-Bayern Müller.

praise from Tuchel

It’s not worth “opening the big barrel” with Müller’s personnel, said Tuchel. It is also part of the fact that Müller was temporarily ailing. In the fight for his twelfth championship personally, Müller knows what is important, said Tuchel.

The Munich coach praised the multitude of chances, many of which Jamal Musiala initiated. The 20-year-old also fell in the crowd in the Schalke penalty area against Cedric Brunner. After studying the video images, referee Robert Schröder awarded a penalty. Kimmich converted safely against Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow. Overall, he initially prevented even worse against the dominant Munich.

His injured Munich goalkeeper colleague Manuel Neuer, who made further steps towards a comeback on the training ground this week after a serious broken leg, had just returned to his seat when he was able to celebrate 3-0 through Gnabry after the break. The national player scored in the third game in a row and symbolizes the recent improvement in form in Munich. “He worked hard for it,” said Tuchel in praise of the striker, who has scored four times in the last three games. “Nothing is as important to a striker as goals.”
