Mast year 2022: why there are so many acorns, beechnuts and chestnuts

Beechnuts and acorns crackle under the soles of walkers with every step, and huge chestnuts roll through the area. Is that still normal or is the enormous abundance of nature possibly a bad omen?

“There have never been as many as this year”: My best friend is the proud owner of a fully grown walnut tree in a suburb of Hamburg and can’t keep up with collecting and processing the nuts. To dry, they cover an entire square meter of the hallway in the family home. He and his wife have already filled and stacked more than 20 boxes with the nuts. Everyone who comes to visit gets a full paper bag to take home.
