It all started in Nuremberg, at the CSU party congress, Friday a week ago. Markus Söder tackled a topic that he had by then largely avoided. One that the people “more and more annoying”, said the CSU party leader, the topic “with gender”. He had heard that students “get worse grades in their exams” if they don’t put a gender asterisk. So he asked Science Minister Bernd Sibler (CSU) “to change that,” said Söder. Then he shouted: “That can’t be in Bavaria!” The hall cheered, loud applause. But now, a week later, there is a question: can reality keep up with Söder’s claims?
