“Not being able to sing one day is a terrible thought, but if it happens I can’t change anything,” Marianne Faithfull told AFP. The 74-year-old British singer is struggling to recover from the coronavirus she contracted last year before being hospitalized. “I exercise once a week with a friend who comes over to my house,” she says, “really not knowing” if she will ever be able to sing again.

“This pandemic hit me badly, I almost died, and now I have what is called a long Covid, I suffer from the lungs and I cannot speak for very long”, she explained to our colleague from her London home where she is resting.

Poems set to music

Marianne Faithfull did not remain inactive, however, since she was able to complete a project that she had started before falling ill: setting to music 19th century romantic poets (Byron, Shelley, Keats, etc.) which she recites. the texts. The result, the album titled She Walks in Beauty, comes out this Friday.

“With the pandemic, we couldn’t do it like before in the studio. I recorded in my apartment, she says. These conditions were not as difficult as I imagined; the hardest part was not having everyone’s opinion right away, like when you do in the studio: just with people’s body language, you know if they like it or not. “
