Manchester United shoots down Chelsea and makes Champions League clear – Liverpool’s hopes burst

Team manager Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC have to bury their remaining hope of reaching the Champions League. Since Manchester United won the catch-up game of matchday 32 against Chelsea 4-1 (2-0) on Thursday, the Reds no longer have a chance to climb into the top four of the Premier League. Fifth in the table, Liverpool will compete in the Europa League.

Mohamed Salah said on Instagram on Thursday evening “completely devastated”: “There is absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to get into the Champions League next year and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying for the competition is the bare minimum. I’m sorry but it’s too early for any encouragement or optimism. We failed you and ourselves.”

Going into Sunday’s season finale, Klopp and Liverpool (66 points) are four points behind Newcastle United in fourth. Manchester United (72 points) jumped to third place after beating Chelsea.

Casemiro (6th), Anthony Martial (45th + 6th), Bruno Fernandes (73rd, penalty kick) and Marcus Rashford (78th) secured the Red Devils participation in the premier class with their goals, Joao Felix (89th) scored for Chelsea. Already-established champions Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal have also qualified.

After an extremely mixed season with bitter defeats, Liverpool had recently been able to quietly dream of the Champions League again. In the past ten league games, the Klopp team had remained unbeaten and had seven wins. Finally, Liverpool travel to relegated Southampton on Sunday.
