In Gironde, investigators are looking into a new marital tragedy. A 40-year-old man was imprisoned on Wednesday for throwing caustic soda in his partner’s face, while awaiting his appearance before the criminal court, the Libourne prosecutor’s office announced.
“He is accused of having thrown soda on his partner’s face and body,” wrote Loïs Raschel, public prosecutor in Libourne, without giving further details on the circumstances.
Suspect in court this Thursday
The suspect is due to be tried this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. “as part of an immediate appearance procedure for charges of intentional violence against a spouse or partner resulting in incapacity for work for more than eight days,” according to the prosecution. Pending the hearing, the forty-year-old was placed in pre-trial detention today.
According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect allegedly sprayed his victim with a household product in a village near Libourne. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda, is a chemical that poses risks of skin corrosion or irritation, as well as eye damage.
