Malia Obama attended a film festival in France in a striking checked dress. She thinks her look by Vivienne Westwood is “cool”.

Malia Ann Obama (26), the eldest daughter of the former US President Barack Obama (63) rarely appears on a red carpet – but at the weekend she made an exception to promote her directorial debut “The Heart”. She had chosen a special look for the appearance.

“I don’t know much about fashion, but I like wearing it”

At the opening ceremony for the 50th annual Deauville American Film Festival in France, she walked the red carpet in an outfit designed by Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022). Malia Obama wore a checkered outfit consisting of an off-the-shoulder red, white and gray corset top and an asymmetrical blue and white skirt. She combined her street style look with knee-high leather boots. She wore her long brown hair loose.

“It’s cool,” said the 26-year-old in a video published by “Pop Base” about her outfit. “I don’t know much about fashion, but I like wearing it.” She also called Westwood a “queen” because of her extravagant designs. The daughter of Barack Obama and his wife Michelle (60) also explained that she was “so excited” before her performance. She presented her short film “The Heart” at the festival.

She wants to have her own career – without the famous surname

Malia’s project debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah earlier this year. For the event, she walked the red carpet in a gray coat, a pinstripe button-down top, black pants, and burgundy boots.

The Harvard graduate’s short film follows a man grieving the loss of his mother while coming to terms with her final wish. “The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret,” Malia Obama said in a “Meet the Artist” video. “But I also think it’s trying to find where tenderness and closeness can lie in these things.” She added that she hopes the film will help viewers “feel a little less lonely or at least remind them not to forget the people who are.”

By the way, she dropped her famous last name for her first film: in the credits, the young director is simply listed as “Malia Ann”.
