A campsite in Malaysia was hit by a landslide overnight. Several people lost their lives. Rescue workers continue to search for missing people under the earth.

At least 12 people have died in a landslide at a campsite in Malaysia, officials said. About 17 people are still feared that they are still buried. In the past few hours, however, these numbers have fluctuated.

A campsite at an organic farm in Batang Kali, about 50 kilometers north of the capital Kuala Lumpur, was hit by the landslide during the night. It is estimated that more than 90 Malaysians were there at the time, said District Police Chief Suffian Abdullah. A five-year-old boy was among the dead, he said at a press conference.

53 people unharmed

Initially, seven people were taken to the hospital with injuries. 53 people were therefore unharmed and taken to safety. The search for the missing will continue. According to the information, around 400 helpers took part in the search and rescue operation.

According to the head of the fire and rescue services in the state of Selangor, the mass of earth slid from a height of about 30 meters from a roadside onto the square. The site is not far from Genting Hills Hill Resort, a popular tourist destination. The campsite is probably used especially by locals.

No heavy rains

The accident was surprising because there had been no heavy rain in the past few days, only light drizzle, as one of the campers reported to the English-language newspaper “New Straits Times”.
