Major potato recall at Rewe and Penny: Pesticide warning published

There is currently an urgent recall of potatoes. These were sold at Rewe and Penny. A health risk cannot be ruled out.

Frankfurt – Are potatoes on the menu for dinner? Then consumers should be particularly careful now. There is currently a recall of potatoes, which are mainly Rewe and its subsidiary Penny were found on the vegetable shelves in several federal states.

As the company Hans-Willi-Böhmer Verpackung & Vertrieb GmbH in a Press release informed, the food warning applies as a precautionary measure “for reasons of preventive consumer protection”. A health risk cannot be ruled out. There are possible residues of plant protection products, so-called pesticides, which are used during cultivation to eliminate pests and plants. Eating the potatoes is therefore strongly advised against.

They were sold in several federal states, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower SaxonySaxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

Some time ago, harmful pesticides were discovered in a chicken seasoning – a recall followed. Just recently there was a major olive oil recall – also because of pesticides.

“Products with a different batch than 463065 and the Lilly variety are not affected by this precautionary measure,” it continues.

Pesticide residues discovered in potatoes – what customers can do

Pesticides are toxic and can therefore also harm the health of humans and animals. As the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation informs, plant protection products Cancer-diseases and cause fertility and genetic damage. Their use in agriculture is therefore highly controversial. From summer 2024, for example, two corn pesticides will be banned in Germany.

“Hans-Willi-Böhmer Verpackung & Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG expressly apologizes to consumers for the inconvenience caused,” the company writes. Customers can return the potatoes affected by the recall to the respective Rewe or Penny store “and get the purchase price refunded, even without presenting the receipt.” (asc)
