Maisach: emergency accommodation from the Internet – Fürstenfeldbruck

It’s quite drafty in the tent next to the refugee accommodation in Maisach. The doors are still missing, as are some wall elements. However, workers from a company in the Augsburg district are in the process of inserting pieces of wall into the last gaps. Above all, it has to be warm in the tent when refugees move in. There are hardly any buildings left in the district for them, so those seeking protection have to live and sleep in tents. The tent is easy to heat, says a person in charge from the district office, despite the thin walls, nobody has to freeze. There are two steel tanks outside. Each of them has space for 1000 liters of heating oil. Next to it you can see the heaters. They will blow warm air into the tent through a thick hole in a wall panel.

The buildings are tent halls of the kind used for trade fairs. Transparent roof tarpaulins let in light, and there is space for up to 80 people on a floor area of twelve by 30 meters. In order to structure the room and offer the refugees a little privacy, partitions are to be set up between the bunk bed and closet units. It should look similar to the vaccination center, which is where the partition walls come from. Safety has also been considered, with fire extinguishers in every corner of the tent hall. Two door areas with access ramps suitable for the disabled are also planned. The floor is made of steel-framed wooden panels, a common material for the floor of large tents. A carpet is laid over the wooden elements. The beds and cupboards in the tent should also be set up by Monday.

So far, the district has accommodated refugees in buildings. When more refugees came than before in 2015 and 2016, school gymnasiums were requisitioned as temporary quarters. As a result, school sports were canceled and clubs lost their practice facilities. District Administrator Thomas Karmasin wants to prevent this this time. Like several cities, Karmasin therefore relies on tents as accommodation. However, this is new territory for the district administration. The refugee tent in Maisach is the first to be set up by the district. Experience with this type of accommodation is not yet available. They therefore searched the Internet for suitable tents and a provider, they say, but could not find anything regionally. The result of the search was a company in Schwabmünchen that rents out large tents for conferences and trade fairs and sets them up and dismantles them.

Suitable locations were also needed. In Maisach, a sufficiently large area was free, right next to the asylum accommodation. It functions as an anchor center for the district. All arriving refugees are brought to her. There the registration takes place, there is the first money as well as a medical examination and, if necessary, medical certificates. The tent next door could therefore also be used as the first place to stay – and only for a transitional period. The proximity to the asylum accommodation also has the advantage that the refugees from the tent can use the existing kitchens and sanitary facilities.

The situation is different at the second location in Mammendorf. There the tent is to be erected in the parking lot for mobile homes next to the leisure facility. However, toilets, showers, washrooms and a kitchen are missing, which is why several containers are to be set up there.

A large truck is parked in front of the tent in Maisach. Only the double-leaf doors are left of everything he transported on his loading area. The wall elements are already in place. Now a crane lifts the doors from the loading area. A worker fastens a tarpaulin under the curved arcum roof. The tent will soon be closed, the wind stays outside. Then it can be heated at any time.
