Just over a year ago, things looked bleak for young people who wanted to become pilots. Because of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, many countries continued to keep their borders closed, albeit against protests from the travel industry. There were forecasts that the demand for air travel had changed structurally and permanently – and with that the prospects for the once glamorous profession in the cockpit were more or less gone: hardly any new jobs, worsening conditions and employers in the permanent crisis. Become a pilot? Forget it!
