Lower Franconia: After firecracker attacks on police officers – investigations against 15 people – Bavaria

After a suspected attack on police officers in Lower Franconia at the turn of the year, the police have concluded their investigations. 15 suspects aged between 13 and 51 have been identified and 17 investigations have been initiated against them, a spokesman for the Lower Franconia Police Headquarters announced on Monday. The main suspects are accused of a particularly serious case of breach of the peace. The police are also investigating violations of the Explosives Act, Narcotics Act and Weapons Act. Other charges include property damage, misuse of emergency calls and incitement to hatred.

The five main suspects, young people aged between 13 and 17 at the time, are said to have shown solidarity with a 19-year-old who had previously been arrested in Marktheidenfeld (Main-Spessart district) around the turn of the year. On December 30, 2023 and the following New Year’s Eve, they are said to have attacked police officers and deliberately shot fireworks at their patrol cars. The suspects are also said to have thrown pyrotechnics into the courtyard of the police building in Marktheidenfeld. Two police officers were reportedly slightly injured.

A specially appointed investigative commission then searched five apartments of the main suspects from the Main-Spessart district in January. The investigators found small amounts of narcotics, prohibited items such as one-hand knives, a telescopic baton and pyrotechnics. The public prosecutor’s office must now decide whether to charge the suspects.
