Friday the 13th doesn’t always have to be bad luck. On that day, the jackpot of the Mega Millions lottery was hit in the USA. And at $1.35 billion, it was the second-highest in their history.

As the lottery company announced on Saturday, the prize goes to a single ticket owner from the US state of Maine. The lucky numbers: 30, 43, 45, 46 and 61 and the golden mega ball 14.

Prize will be paid out over 30 years, with a cash option of $724.6 million should the winner opt for a one-off payment.

Huge lottery jackpots are not uncommon in the USA

The immense jackpots are not uncommon in the nationwide Mega Millions and Powerball draws in the USA. Since 2016, six lottery jackpots — split between Mega-Millions and rival lottery Powerball — have surpassed $1 billion in the United States, including three last year.

While many consider Friday the 13th an unlucky day, it has paid off for Mega Millions players over the years, with six jackpots already won on the day. Four of them went to the US state of Michigan alone. The largest mega-million prize to date was distributed in South Carolina in 2015 and amounted to $1.54 billion.

Friday’s win is the fourth largest lottery win in US history. The biggest jackpot in the US to date was hit in California in November 2022: the Powerball lottery was worth $2.04 billion at the time.
