London property madness: A tiny one-bedroom flat has fetched a staggering price at auction – and the seller was hoping for even more.

Compared to this little room, a tiny house is almost a palace: in London, the sale of a tiny 7 square meter apartment caused a stir. The apartment, which according to the “Guardian” is probably the smallest apartment in London, fetched the proud price of 90,000 British pounds at an online auction – the equivalent of around 108,000 euros.

The one-room apartment on the first floor of an apartment building has little more than a loft bed with a built-in cupboard, a few storage compartments and a microwave. If necessary, a table attached to the wall can be folded out. Half of the window is covered by the bed, next to it there is a small washbasin with a lower and upper cabinet. There is a tiny wet room next door that is so narrow that you could shower while sitting on the toilet.

Monthly rent: just under 1000 euros

The tiny apartment’s auction started at £50,000 and ended with a top bid of £90,000 – 80% above the reserve price. Nevertheless, the seller should not be completely satisfied with the price achieved. He bought the cubbyhole for £103,500 in 2017.

After all, he was able to benefit from not inconsiderable rental income in the meantime. According to the Guardian, the monthly rent was 800 pounds (around 960 euros). The current tenant uses the tiny apartment as a second home for one or two nights a week when he needs to stay downtown for work and otherwise lives elsewhere.

The apartment is located in the Lower Clapton district in East London and is emblematic of the living situation in the British capital. Rental and real estate prices here are at a significantly higher level than in major German cities. Stuart Collar-Brown, head of the auctioneering platform, said the flat would be a good fit for doctors or nurses at nearby Homerton Hospital or people working in central London.
