At the beginning of the pandemic, there was an optimistic forecast: the new situation could have a positive impact on gender equality. Men, it is believed, would see in lockdown how much time housework and childcare actually cost and then take on more of the unpaid care work. This, in turn, would lead to a more equal distribution of unpaid work in the long term – and that is an essential component in promoting equality in paid work.
