Local recreation – More space in Fiji – District of Munich

At the moment, the autumn weather invites you to go for a walk on the Heimstettener See, but in summer there is much more hustle and bustle: If you want to lie down on one of the meadows on the shore on a hot afternoon, you usually have to look for a free place for a long time. Fiji, as the locals call it, is attracting more and more visitors and bathers. Therefore, the recreation area between Krichheim, Aschheim and Feldkirchen is to be expanded and upgraded in the coming years.

The aim is to further increase the quality of stay at the lake, said Jens Besenthal, managing director of the recreation area association on Tuesday evening when the plans were presented to the construction committee of the Kirchheim municipal council. In order to achieve this, quiet and active areas should be clearly separated in the future. In the north of the lake, for example, a football pitch and a beach volleyball court are planned, as landscape architect Didier Vancutsem explained. The site is to be expanded to include the area of the current parking lot. Sport should also be possible in the south, and there will also be designated barbecue areas – the “wild grilling”, as Kirchheim’s mayor Maximilian Böltl (CSU) calls it, should be restricted.

According to landscape architect Vancutsem, the western and eastern bank are intended purely for rest and relaxation. Overall, more space should be created to lie down. Wide wooden decks right on the water should invite you to relax. “It’s perfect for the evening sun,” said Vancutsem. Benches are to be built into the meadow, and the planners also want to expand the pebble beach so that not very good swimmers can go into the shallow water. Similar to the Munich Olympic lake, there will be stone terraces in several places on Fiji for sitting and lying down, which lead in steps like an amphitheater to the water. One of these zones is to be located in the catering area, which is also being expanded: The Aying brewery wants to convert the building, which is currently only used in the bathing season, into a year-round business. Landscape architect Vancutsem also announced that the beer garden will be enlarged.

Despite the comprehensive measures, there are no costs for the municipalities, as Besenthal assured: The recreation area association will assume the entire amount. The sewer pipes for the new sanitary facilities are to be built as early as next year. The active and rest areas will then be gradually converted in 2023 and 2024. If everything goes according to plan, the measures should be completed in 2025. However, the planners are keeping an eye on the State Horticultural Show in Kirchheim in 2024: “We are already making sure that there is no major construction site here at the time,” promised Besenthal. “At least the important areas should be ready by then.”
