Contrary to fears, the AfD will not be able to win any important offices in the Thuringian local elections on Sunday. But in many cases the decision will only be made in the runoff elections in two weeks – and a neo-Nazi is among them.
The people of Thuringia have voted and anyone who wants to draw hope for the democratic parties from the result can do so: A landslide victory for the right-wing extremists in the battle for municipal offices is not forthcoming. At least for the time being. On Sunday, the AfD was unable to take over any of the 13 district offices that were up for election. Nor was it able to take over a position as mayor in one of Thuringia’s larger cities.
