From Corsican shepherd to assassin of the prefect Erignac, the “myth” Yvan Colonna

On the evening of February 6, 1998 in Ajaccio (Corse-du-Sud) the prefect Claude Erignac was shot dead at close range. Never a representative of the State had been killed since the Second World War.

A year and a half later, four men were arrested and confessed. An arrest warrant is issued against a fifth, presented by other suspects as the assassin of the prefect Erignac: it is Yvan Colonna. He immediately becomes the most wanted man in France.

He flees into the Corsican maquis. Four years on the run followed until his arrest in July 2003 in a sheepfold near the village of Olmeto (Corse-du-Sud). Convicted in 2007, 2009 and then 2012, Yvan Colonna has always denied his involvement in the assassination of the prefect.

The prefects called for “respect” and “restraint”

In a press release published Thursday evening, the association of the prefectural body and senior officials of the Ministry of the Interior affirms to “join the declaration of the President of the Republic calling for respect and restraint in this time of mourning”.

She “saluteed the memory of the prefect Claude Érignac, cowardly assassinated in the exercise of his functions, on February 6, 1998, and assured his courageous family of his affection”.

Between emotion and anger on the island of Beauty

The death on March 21 of Yvan Colonna caused terror in Corsica. Nearly three weeks after his attack in Arles prison by a radicalized prisoner, many inhabitants of the Isle of Beauty do not hide their anger at the French state, responsible according to them for the death of the Corsican prisoner.

Violent clashes have also occurred in recent weeks in Corsica between demonstrators and the police.

Convicted three times for the murder of the prefect Claude Erignac on February 6, 1998, Ivan Colonna had always claimed his innocence.
