The US actress Amber Heard has apparently reached an agreement in the legal dispute with her ex-husband Johnny Depp. She waived an appeal process against a jury verdict that was made in early June.
The American actress Amber Heard has said she has settled the legal dispute with her ex-husband Johnny Depp. She made this “difficult decision” after careful consideration, the 36-year-old wrote on Instagram. This is not an admission of guilt.
Several months ago, a jury ruled that Heard had to pay Depp more than $10 million. “I’m making this decision after losing faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and as fodder for social media,” Heard said.
Week-long defamation process
After the six-week trial, in which the former spouses had accused themselves of domestic violence, the jury largely sided with Depp at the beginning of June – but also agreed with Heard on some points.
The actress has been sentenced to pay more than $10 million in damages to the Pirates of the Caribbean star for defamation. Depp was only obliged to pay two million dollars in damages to the actress known from films such as “Aquaman” and “The Danish Girl”.
At the core of the civil lawsuit filed by Depp was a 2018 comment published by the Washington Post in which Heard described himself as a victim of domestic violence. She did not name her ex-husband; However, Depp argued that the allegation was clearly aimed at him and had seriously damaged his career. Heard responded with a counterclaim.
Report on agreement with ex-husband Depp
Depp and Heard both opposed the verdict. Depp didn’t comment after Heard’s announcement. It is unclear whether the 59-year-old will continue to challenge the verdict.
US broadcaster Fox reported that Heard had now agreed with Depp to pay him $1 million. The broadcaster referred to an unnamed source who was familiar with the agreement. In her Instagram post, Heard did not provide any information on how the dispute would be resolved.
