Lionel Messi’s father assures his son would like to return to FC Barcelona

Be careful not to cause too many false hopes among FC Barcelona fans. The father and representative of Lionel Messi, Jorge, assured on Monday that the now ex-Parisian would like to return to the fold, but that no decision has yet been made. “I don’t know anything, yet” slipped Jorge Messi, pursued by a swarm of journalists in a video broadcast by the Spanish media, when asked about a possible return of “Leo” to Barça. “I would love” for him to return to Catalonia, added Jorge Messi, half-smiling a “yes” when asked if Barca were his son’s preferred option.

The father and representative of the Argentine world champion, however, recalled that the possible return of Lionel Messi to Catalonia depends on “a lot of things”. Jorge Messi also confirmed having discussed with Blaugrana president Joan Laporta, but that “nothing concrete” came out of this discussion. He informed the reporters present that his son would make a decision soon. “I don’t know what decision, I don’t know yet, we still have to talk about a lot of things,” he tempered.

Barca money worries complicate matters

On Saturday, against Clermont (2-3), Messi played his last match with Paris Saint-Germain, the club he joined after leaving Barça in 2021. Barça have recently shown strong interest in the return of the top scorer in the history of the Catalan club: Laporta and coach Xavi have notably confirmed their interest in Messi, despite the club’s finances. But the Spanish champion is still waiting for La Liga to validate its economic viability plan to be able to register new recruits.

According to the press, this is what has prevented Barca from making a formal offer to recruit the Argentine star so far. According to the specialized media, Inter Miami, of the North American Championship (MLS), has also shown interest. According to AFP, senior executives of Saudi club Al-Hilal came to Paris on Sunday to try to secure a huge contract with Lionel Messi.
