Bayer Leverkusen has won the DFB Cup for the second time in history. The team has thus crowned the most successful season in the club’s history with a double – and prevailed against Kaiserslautern despite being outnumbered.
Bayer Leverkusen also won the DFB Cup, making it the first time in the history of the factory team that they have won the double. The German champions from the Rhine defeated the Palatinate second division football team 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 (1-0) in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. The only goal of the match in front of 74,322 spectators was scored by Granit Xhaka in the 16th minute.
For Leverkusen, it is the second cup triumph after 1993. Three days after the 0:3 defeat in the Europa League final against Atalanta Bergamo and the only defeat of the season, coach Xabi Alonso’s team had to worry about winning the cup. Especially since Bayer professional Odilon Kossounou was shown a second yellow card in the 44th minute and his teammates had to play more than half a game with fewer players.
Kaiserslautern would have been the second time a second division team had won the DFB Cup. Hannover 96 was the only team to have achieved this in 1992.
