Leipzig Airport: Runway is being renovated – Auto & Mobil

It’s loud and dirty, big excavators are swinging their shovels, heavy trucks keep rolling over the wide concrete runway: where aircraft that normally weigh tons take off and land, the construction workers are currently in charge. At Leipzig / Halle Airport, the 3.6-kilometer-long north runway will be refurbished until September. “After 21 years of intensive use,” as the operating company explains, and a little more than 400,000 take-offs and landings, the old runway now has to be completely renewed LED technology installed.

Leipzig / Halle Airport, whose origins go back to 1927, has meanwhile developed into the second largest air freight hub in Germany and number four in Europe. According to the company, the volume of goods has increased more than tenfold since 2007 to almost 1.4 million tons in 2020, and the trend is still increasing. In the corona pandemic, the airport came through the crisis relatively well compared to other airports, precisely because it relies so heavily on the still booming air freight business. The operating company therefore intends to expand the airport further in the coming years, primarily as a logistics location. Around 80,000 take-offs and landings were counted in 2019, and up to 118,000 aircraft movements are forecast for 2032.
